“Bless a Nest” for the Holidays

Condition: Stage 4 Neuroblastoma City, State: Redmond, OR Club: Summit High School Pacific Crest Middle School
Meet Sparrow, Charlotte York

During this time of year, Sparrow Clubs works with local schools and partner organizations to bring some holiday cheer to Sparrow Families through their “Bless a Nest” program. Students at partnering schools create special ornaments containing Sparrow Family wishes for display at sponsoring businesses for fulfillment.

This year, Summit High School and Pacific Crest Middle School adopted Charlotte York as their Sparrow and Compass Commercial provided a home for the special Sparrow tree ornaments in support of Charlotte and her family.

Charlotte was diagnosed with high risk stage 4 Neuroblastoma on May 23rd, 2015. It is one of the most common cancers found in infants and one of the most aggressive childhood cancers known. After 18 months of age, the chance of relapse is very high. Neuroblastoma most commonly starts in the tissue of the adrenal glands. It is a rare disease in which a solid tumor is formed by special nerve cells called neuroblasts. Normally, these immature cells grow and mature into functioning nerve cells. But in neuroblastoma, they become cancer cells. It occurs when neuroblasts grow and divide uncontrollably instead of developing into nerve cells. The exact cause of this abnormal growth is unknown, but scientists believe it’s related to a defect in the genes of a neuroblast that allows it to divide uncontrollably. About 700 new cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed each year in the United States.

Charlotte YorkWe’re so pleased to report that all 19 of the “Bless a Nest” ornaments were fulfilled by our team before even making it to our tree! Combined with several contributions to the Winter Wonderland Silent Auction,  and generous donations, Compass Commercial has contributed over $2,800 toward the York family in the last week.

We hope you will take a moment to learn more about Charlotte and the enormous challenges this family is battling. Please consider joining Compass Commercial in support of Sparrow Clubs and Charlotte.

You can read more about her journey on her Sparrow Club page.
